Sound Healing

Sound is blissful Sound has moved people to different states of consciousness since the beginning of time. Gongs, Himalayan bowls, other instruments and recorded music all usher us into blissful states. Spiritual music moves many to a feeling of connection with the divine.

How does it work? Why does this happen? There is a scientific explanation involving vibration, frequency, and resonance.

You are a vibratory being—every organ, cell, and fluid in your bodies vibrates at the atomic level. Scientist Barbara Hero measured the frequency of human organs and found that the liver vibrates at 319.88 Hz. (cycles per second), the stomach at 110 Hz., a bone at 418.3 Hz., and so forth. Of course, not every liver vibrates at exactly the same frequency because we are all unique symphonies of vibration.

The body always tries to heal itself—when you get a cut, it heals. When an organ or any body part is out of balance, experiencing disease, it wants to heal. When a sound therapist plays an instrument that vibrates at the precise frequency that is healthy for an out-of-balance organ, it perceives this vibration as normal and tries to vibrate at the same frequency to heal itself. In music theory this is called sympathetic resonance. This may be why you are drawn to some music more than others.

The gong and Himalayan bowls are special because each instrument contains many different frequencies in its vibrations. After striking the instrument, it creates a fundamental frequency and then many more harmonic tones. It is like taking a multiple vitamin—your body perceives all the frequencies and then the one it needs urges the out of balance part of your body back to its natural, healthy vibratory state. The resonance of your own voice will also help you heal. Of course, if there are bacteria or other diseases still in the body, it will likely pull things back out of balance.

Music therapy is an amazing and overlooked part of the field of energy medicine, and it is recognized as an important holistic medicine by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Try it!
